Kanye’s mom died following a “cosmetic procedure” this weekend. (Insiders say her death was caused by an allergic reaction to medication for a tummy tuck and breast augmentation.) She was only 58.
Donda West raised Kanye on her own since he was three, inspiring the song, “Hey Mama,” on Kanye’s album Late Registration. Among the lyrics: “Hey Mama, I wanna scream so loud for you, cuz I’m so proud of you … I appreciate what you allowed for me. I just want you to be proud of me.” Earlier this year, she released a book called “Raising Kanye: Life Lessons From the Mother of a Hip-Hop Superstar.”
Dying for beauty… such a shame. Thank goodness I pass out from the very sight of needles, which will prevent me from ever stepping foot in a plastic surgeon’s office. Seriously, my knees buckle on sight — I once gave blood for my high school blood drive and started to faint, so they had to put me in the “special reclining chair,” with my feet raised above my head… in front of all my high school classmates.
I looked ridiculously cool, as you can imagine. Between that and winning the spelling bee, it’s a shock I wasn’t the prom queen!

“Dying for beauty… such a shame.”
You said it, Candy. It’s really sad that flat stomachs, slim hips, and big boobs are leading the list of things to focus your attention on, in Western culture.
November 12th, 2007 at 10:37 amAgreed. Hopefully her tragic early death will raise awareness of the dangers lurking in the shiny facade of cosmetic surgery. I say let’s allow ourselves to age gracefully and stop caving to the pressure of trying to look 25 when we’re 50. The older you get, the more you can get away with being whacky and eccentric - what fun!
Rest in peace Donda.
November 12th, 2007 at 11:05 amThis is very sad to me that this happened… I hope West is ok.
November 12th, 2007 at 11:13 amI read somewhere else that she had a PhD.
November 12th, 2007 at 11:17 amBless her heart. Sad to hear about that. I hope this opens people’s eyes about the dangers of cosmetic procedures.
November 12th, 2007 at 11:55 ami hate needles too. i hate what they stand for even more.
November 12th, 2007 at 1:09 pmEh. It’s not that big a mystery as to what type of surgery she had.
Here’s the original photo that is included in this article.

November 12th, 2007 at 4:06 pmAgree with most comments — the dark side of
cosmetic surgery is something that is not
publicized enough. Surgical procedures, even
minor ones, always entail risk. And these days, with MRSA and everything, I’d think three times
before voluntarily going under the knife.
On a brighter note: Candy, in high school, with

Candie’s …??!! Inquiring minds want to know.
No, I wasn’t true to my namesake, Librarian Kathleen. If only. I was probably wearing Birkenstock knock-offs or some other oh-so-sexy early ’90s footwear fad…
November 12th, 2007 at 5:55 pmi read some other doctors had refused to perform the procedures on her because of her heart condition. what a shame to think she lost her life because she was so desperate to get rid of an extra inch. really makes you think.

November 12th, 2007 at 9:36 pmMany women with big breasts have extensive back problems because of the weight of their chests. As I understand it, this was less a cosmetic operation…and more in tone with what I have outlined. I am certain this had something to do with her decision.
I wish you a peaceful journey. God Bless.
November 12th, 2007 at 10:59 pmHope Kanye becomes an advocate for patients. It may give him some degree of peace.
