During my European travels, I discovered many wonderful things about England, none of which was its cuisine. Thus explaining why the food — some of which contains body parts such as kidneys or “spotted dick” (I had no idea Carrot Top was popular in England) — remains on permanent display in pubs, where people drink for hours but nobody ever eats.
But that’s all about to change now:
Squirrel-based cuisine has taken England by storm, reports Metro.co.uk, with the Cornish squirrel pasty providing especially good eatin’. (Check out the Not-Safe-for-Weak-Stomach picture here.)
British butchers claim grey squirrels, which apparently taste like wild boar or duck, are “moist and sweet” because their diet primarily consists of berries and nuts. Of course, some squirrels also partake of bird eggs, trash and bugs, which lends a certain je ne sais quois to the flavor.
“I wasn’t sure at first, and wondered would people really eat it. Now I take every squirrel I can get my hands on,” said a fish store owner. “I’ve had days when I have managed to get 60 and they’ve all sold straight away…It is especially tasty fricasséed with Cornish cream and walnuts.”
