Meet Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon, an adorable lesbian couple that tied the knot in San Francisco today after being together for 55 freakin’ years.
No word on why they wanted to ruin a good thing with marriage.
I kid, I kid… we all know they did it for the toasters and heart-shaped fondue sets!
Del, 87, and Phyllis, 84, were the first to participate in a 2004 challenge of California laws against same-sex marriage, exchanging wedding vows only to see the ceremony voided later. But now the law is on their side, baby! As is Cupid, it would seem:
“We get along well,” Phyllis said. “And we love each other.”
Wait — so they fell in love in the ’50s? But my grandmother told me it was the Village People that turned people gay! Next you’re going to tell me that you CAN get pregnant when having sex standing up…

I read about this couple on the BBC yesterday. When they were first together in the 1950’s they were fired from their jobs and put through electroshock “therapy”. Very little warms the cockles of my dark and bitter heart but these adorable, brave women did. I am so glad they lived to see more enlightened times.
June 17th, 2008 at 6:42 amThey are as old as dirt, but absolutely wonderful. They have been lesbians activists all this time. How nice that they got to be “first.”

June 17th, 2008 at 9:12 amI love this story.
And, Candy: you CAN get pregnant while standing up — but only, ONLY when you do the wild thing the way Mickey Rourke and Kim Basinger did in one scene in the movie 9 & 1/2 Weeks.
(Watch and learn, young people.)
June 17th, 2008 at 2:44 pmLet those ladies laugh in the face of thrice-divorced talk-radio hosts who think gays will cheapen the ’sanctity of marriage’. 55 years, bitches!!
