A new study of late-night political jokes reveals that the network comedians, such as Letterman and Leno, are avoiding humor about Democratic candidate Barack Obama, while making lots o’ jokes at the expense of our “misunderestimated” president, George W., and Senators John McCain and Hillary Clinton.
The Center for Media and Public Affairs found that only cable’s Comedy Central — with Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert — is slightly more willing to poke fun at the Illinois senator.
The study covered all jokes between Jan. 1 and July 31 in late-night monologues by Jay Leno, Conan O’Brien, David Letterman, Stewart and Colbert. No word on why they excluded my late-night crush and future father of my children (in the event that George Clooney and Ryan Reynolds renew their restraining orders are not up to the task), Craig Ferguson.
Combining the laugh lines from all five researched shows, Bush was the most mocked, with 605; Clinton had 562; McCain got 549; and Obama trailed, with 382. Letterman had the most fun at Hillary’s expense, with 146 jokes about her and only 46 about Obama. Yowza. Leno had the most Bush jokes (208), with Hillary right behind at 204.
CandyKirby.com tried reaching the late-night writing staffs for comment, but they were too busy writing more of the easy jokes to respond.
Oh, c’mon guys, mix it up — equal opportunity fun-making! At the very least, there MUST be some good ear jokes in there: “Barack’s ears are so big… he heard a “Who” long before Horton did.” Or something about his Messiah status in the media…? “Barack Obama’s campaign is now selling a new bumper sticker: ‘Honk If You Think I Am Jesus!’”

I think the late-night writers are leaving the political jokes to Jesse Jackson…

August 24th, 2008 at 12:23 pmit’s because he’s black (afraid they’ll be seen as racist) and we don’t know enough about him to have good material. all the other politicans have been around for a long time so it’s easier to make fun of them.
