In a rare media interview, David Letterman tells Rolling Stone magazine that he — like so many other people — is confused by NBC’s plan to remove Jay Leno, who consistently tops the late-night ratings. Conan O’Brien reportedly will take over “Tonight” in June 2009, with Jimmy Fallon moving into Conan’s “Late Night” spot.
Talk about musical chairs. (Ugh. I never did like that game — some overzealous punk always knocked my ass off the chair! Which must be what Leno’s grumbling about Conan right now.)
“Unless I’m misunderstanding something, I don’t know why, after the job Jay has done for them, why they would relinquish that,” Letterman said, adding, “I have to believe he was not happy about it.”
Letterman speculated whether “that’s actually what’s going to happen,” while acknowledging NBC might be too far down the road to retreat.
On the bright side: Once Jay is a free agent, Letterman can test his head to see “Will it float?“

Letterman is a class act.
September 3rd, 2008 at 10:56 amIsn’t this whole “late night host” thing something from another era? Who really cares? I mean, how many people actually watch this stuff now?
I am old enough to remember when The Tonight Show was the only game in town if you were watching late night TV. Then, it was relevant. And many of us watched.
In those days, the only TV alternatives were a few local non-NBC stations that might broadcast old movies or local pro wrestling until they went off the air at midnight or so.
Today… I leave the sentence for you to finish.
September 3rd, 2008 at 2:55 pmleno still gets about 6 million viewers a night and letterman gets 4. the rest of the hosts really are irrelevant.
September 3rd, 2008 at 4:37 pmI myself don’t understand what the rush was to oust Leno. Clearly it was not his decision, they really jumped the gun and it’s baffling. Too bad it’s CBS that will suffer with Jimmy Fallon at the late night helm. I don’t think he can carry a show like that.
September 3rd, 2008 at 11:24 pmI despise Conan; he’s SO creepy. I don’t really care that much for Letterman either, but apparently others love him. I enjoy Leno a lot, and will follow him to his next show (hopefully). Craig Ferguson is my favorite host out of all, but he’ll probably be in the same time slot until King Letterman is 100.
